How to encourage kids to read books?

04.01.2022

Who wouldn’t want to be crowned Reader of the Year? Both young and old would undoubtedly carry such a title with pride. However, to earn it, it’s a good idea to dust off your bookshelf and reach for books more frequently. Let’s be honest—our enthusiasm for reading varies. But reading can be so much fun! While adults need just a little push, instilling this passion in kids requires helping them start their reading journey as early as possible. Incorporating tools like indoor playground equipment into reading spaces might make this journey even more exciting. One of the best ways is to create a reading space inspired by the Montessori method.

Montessori Method and reading books

The Montessori method is very close to us, and our products are designed in its spirit. This wide range of educational and upbringing guidelines can be applied in everyday life, not just in preschools or nurseries.

If the Montessori method is new to you, check out our article on how to set up a child’s room inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia principles.

In this article, we will show how, with the right organization of space and equipment, you can spark a love for books in children and make reading a natural part of their daily routine.

  1. Aesthetic and Minimalist Spaces

Aesthetics is one of the key principles of the Montessori method. A children’s space should be:

  • Bright, appealing, and free of unnecessary items – Chaos can distract a child, which is why it’s important to choose a minimalist decor.
  • Made from natural materials – wood, cotton, and linen are excellent materials that are friendly to both children and the environment.
  • Maintained in muted colors – pastel shades help improve concentration and assist the child in calming down.

In such an atmosphere, imagination and creativity flourish best.

2. Child’s independence – the key to success.

Independence is a core principle of the Montessori method. All activities should empower children to make their own choices and develop decision-making skills. This principle is also critical when encouraging reading:

  • Creating a space where kids can independently choose their books is important.
  • Display the books in a way that the covers are visible, which will further encourage the child to reach for them.

If books surround them and become part of their daily lives, reading will turn into a habit and a pleasure.

3. Montessori bookshelf – functionality and aesthetics.

An appealing way to display books is by using a Montessori-style bookshelf. What are its advantages?

  • Practicality: The books are displayed with their covers facing out, making it easier for the child to choose them.
  • Easy access: The shelves are adapted to the child’s height, allowing little ones to independently reach for books.
  • Versatility: In addition to books, they can also be used to store toys or other accessories.

To encourage children to read, it’s a good idea to regularly swap the books on the shelf, introducing new titles or revisiting favourite ones.

4. Reading nook – a space for relaxation and quiet reading.

A reading nook is a space that promotes both learning and relaxation. Here are a few tips on how to organize it:

  • Soft seating: Cushions, poufs, or blankets will make the space cozy and encourage the child to spend time there.
  • Lighting: Bright, yet soft lighting is key to comfortable reading.
  • Minimalism: The nook should be free from distractions, such as electronic devices or unnecessary decorations.

The Montessori method recommends dividing space into zones. The reading nook should be clearly separated from the play area, which will help the child focus.

5. How to foster a love of books in children?

As you can see, many factors influence the development of a child’s interests. If we dedicate some time to organizing a supportive environment for our young readers, we can help them catch the reading bug.

If we want children to fall in love with reading, we should:

  • Read together with them: Reading together is a great opportunity to build a bond.
  • Be a role model: Let’s show that we also enjoy reaching for books, whether it’s in the evening or during the day.
  • Talk about books: Encourage children to share their impressions of the stories they’ve read.

Encouraging children to read is an investment in their intellectual and emotional development. With the principles of the Montessori method, we can create a space that supports this passion and makes books a constant part of a child’s life. With a little time, creativity, and proper organization, we can help a child catch the reading bug.

And finally, the most important tip: be a role model for your children. Read as much as you can yourself! Creating an inspiring environment with elements like a sensory gym or indoor playground equipment helps, but your example will be the strongest motivator.
